    When used as a noun and referring to humans of both genders, “mate” is NOT a sexy term.

    I, and my mate, disagree. Sexy can only be defined within context. To say anything is either sexy inherently or not sexy inherently is a fundamentally flawed argument, because it lacks context. The SnuggieSutra could be considered sexy, in some context, or it could be considered quite silly, or embarrassing in others.
